Welcome to Ms. Wolfson!

welcome

The members of James Dobson’s Home & School would like to give Ms. Melisa Wolfson a very warm welcome! Ms. Wolfson is joining our pod this year as Dobson’s new Sixth Grade teacher! Her list can be found with the other classes, listed under the ‘Classroom Supplies’ header.

Dear 6th Grade Students and Families:
My name is Melisa Wolfson, the new 6th grade teacher.  I am so excited to be joining the Dobson “Pod”. This is my eighth year teaching in the School District of Philadelphia.  Prior to becoming an educator, I was an Entrepreneur and small business owner, Adjunct Professor at Temple University and Marketing Director for a record label.
I enjoy learning new things, spending time at the beach and riding my motorcycle. I am a local resident of Manayunk,  so you might see me in the neighborhood walking my dog Sophie.
I look forward to meeting you in September!
Warm Wishes,
Melisa Wolfson

Welcome!

Street Construction Around Dobson

cones-v01-phoAs many of you know, the streets immediately surrounding Dobson have been under construction for quite some time.  Dr. Cruice had a meeting with the crews today and was informed that their work will not be finished by September 8th, the start of school.  Please see her message below about how this will impact transportation, AM and PM drop off as well as Dobson’s plan go continue to “make it work” despite the construction!

Hello Dobson Families!
I attended a progress mtg with the coordinators of the PWD construction project surrounding the school; the following were present:

Shawn McKeown- Streets Dep’t Manager,Carl Jadach- PWD Engineer, Scott Melusen, Joe Bokobza- PWD On Site Supervisor, Jim French- Head Contractor, Mr. Amede- on site Contractor

This is what was discussed:

This project is not going to be finished by September 8th.
The plan is as follows:
  1. Hermitage St (East side of school) will be made ‘passable’ with the use of ‘binder’ material. ALL students will use this entrance (Wright St.- on the west side of school- will be closed and blocked to traffic). There will be two travel lanes on this street- one for the buses to park and one for the car driving parents that are dropping off children. Contractor will post temporary NO PARKING signs and the contractor will place barrels, at the end of each work day, to dissuade overnight parking.
  2. Wright Street work should take 5 weeks, weather depending, to be restored completely.  This work will also include that portion of Smick Street that connects to Wright St.
  3. Wright St. work will include the construction of a ‘footway’ that will enable pedestrians to enter the schoolyard.
  4. Once Wright St. work is complete (or nearing completion), this group will convene to assess progress.
  5. Once Wright St. work is complete, traffic to Hermitage St.-on the east side of school- will be closed and blocked to traffic. There will be two travel lanes  created on Wright Street- one for the buses to park and one for the car driving parents that are dropping off children. Contractor will post temporary NO PARKING signs and the contractor will place barrels, at the end of each work day, to dissuade overnight parking.
  6. Hermitage St..-on the east side of school- work should take 4 weeks, weather depending, to be restored completely.
  7. The part of Hermitage St that ascends to meet Ridge Ave will be the next area of focus and construction work. At the time, buses will need to be diverted to Fountain Ave, with a turn onto Smick St to come to the school.

We are going to do everything in our power to make sure that AM and PM Drop off run smoothly.  Check the Dobson Facebook Page and the H&S website for details and updates.

Volunteer Opportunities

There is no better way to get involved with our school community and to get to know our fabulous staff and students than volunteering at an event.  We have tons of volunteer opportunities throughout the school year.  Many of them are described below!

BakeSaleBake Sales

Each classroom at Dobson hosts a bake sale. Parents and friends are asked to donate baked goods but are not limited to baked goods. You may donate fruit or any other healthy snack option of your choosing. Bake sales are on Friday and run 11am-2pm. 3 volunteers ensure that they run smoothly. You are not limited to only volunteering for your child’s classroom bake sale.

All funds raised at each bake sale benefit the host classroom directly!

Halloween Costume Parade and Classroom Parties

cute-halloween-clipart-Halloween-Pumpkin-Clip-art-PhotoHalloween is one of the best days to be a student at Dobson School. Falling on a Friday this year, our Halloween Festivities will kick off with the Annual Halloween Costume Parade. Come volunteer to assist our younger students get their costumes on or set up for a class party All volunteers get to attend the Parade and see the monsters, ghosts, princesses, superheroes and more that take over our auditorium!

Bookfeast

book-clip-art-202682This truly is a special day and one that has been enjoyed by parents, students and staff for many years. Children’s Books related to food, such as Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola or The Very Hungry Caterpillar By Eric Carle, are paired with a coordinating dish of the families choosing. On the day of the event, the dish is sent in and served in an enormous buffet and is displayed alongside coordinating book! The children can sample a few or all of the dishes and get excited about reading.

Holiday Shoppe & Winter Solstice

winter-penguin-clipart-b755e6101069677eaa4d2730280fdf1fThe Holiday Shoppe provides all of Dobson’s students an opportunity to do their holiday shopping for the special people in their lives! This is NOT a fundraiser! All of their purchases are at cost. The children enjoy “shopping” for presents to give. The Home and school offers it purely for them to enjoy.

A favored Dobson tradition is our annual celebration of the Winter Solstice. Each class is invited to come to the library, read a winter theme book with a special guest reader and create a craft that celebrates the season and the shortest day of the year! Hot chocolate and cookies will be served for all to enjoy.

Music Performances & Art Show

973eaba5e8ba9b7ed8ccf19a499ea4e2-1Our annual student performances and Art Show are major highlights of the year at Dobson. What a great way to help showcase the vast artistic talent at Dobson while getting involved in the process. Help Ms. Tierney, Ms. Jarrett and Ms. Purcell by helping with Title I Sign in’s, baking and selling concessions, organizing students, hanging artwork or even making props and set decorations! This is a great way to help showcase the vast artistic talent at Dobson.

Dobson Day

happy-kids-clipart-42208Dobson Day is the day that all members of the Dobson community come together to celebrate Dobson Pride as well as the end for the school year. This is a great time for parents, students and teachers to spend a day having fun and celebrating what makes Dobson a great place to be!

Mrs. Foulk’s Suppy Request

As you know, our Specialist Teachers do not have a homeroom class to help offset the cost of basic classroom supplies each fall, yet all students are lucky enough to meet with these teachers at least 2 times per week. Oftentimes these teachers must reach into their own pockets to supply the basics for their classrooms. To help your student(s) have the best possible experience in Music, Art and Physical Education, please consider donating one or more of the items on my list. Many thanks for taking an active role in your children’s education.
